Social Bookmarking: Diigo Vs. Pinterest

Diigo Vs. Pinterest

Social bookmarking has become such an important part of technology use as it makes our lives easier. Diigo and Pinterest are 2 important means of social bookmarking as both have become popular means of bookmarking for pleasure, work, and so much more! It wasn't until recently that I decided to use Diigo, however I have been using Pinterest since 2012. Between both bookmarking tools, there are many important similarities and differences.

What can Diigo and Pinterest do in terms of social bookmarking? Let's compare both tools by comparing each through the questions below:

·         Can you highlight text in saved sites?
  1.       As you can see in the Diigo link above, my personal Diigo account contains highlighted             text preserved from previous searches.
  2.       Pinterest does not allow the user to highlight text in the same fashion as Diigo.

·         Can you use multiple tags?

  1.       Diigo does allow the user to to multiple tags especially when saving a bookmark: all of the saved bookmarks populate on my personal Diigo page once saved. By incorporating the tags, the user can easily reflect on subjects and search for more similar items.
  2.       Pinterest does not allow the user to provie multiple tags in the same fashion as Diigo.

·         Can others post comments on your site?

  1.       Diigo and Pinterest allow comments to be posted on your site. Additional comments can be posted directly on the Pinterest website and personal blogs attached to Pinterest.
·         Can you follow others?  Can they follow you?

  1.       Both Diigo and Pinterest allow people to follow each other.

·         Can you message people you follow?
  1.  Diigo and Pinterest both allow people to message others to follow them.
·         Are you offered suggestions for related articles?

  1.   Diigo and Pinterest provide suggestions for related articles.

·         Would you continue to use either of these?  Which?  Why?

  1.       Now that have explored Diigo, I use it frequently to highlight ideas and make annotations to articles needed for school. I will continue to use it for future browsing.
  2.      I will also continue to use Pinterest for primarily leisure use and teaching ideas. Sometimes I feel that Pinterest is easier as it allows students to quickly look through ideas visually. I feel that Pinterest would be a great tool for ESL students in an entering and emergent stage of development as it focuses on ideas using mostly pictures.

Comments

  1. I think it is a cool idea to use Pinterest with your ESL students for the reasons you described but also because it allow them to curate their own interests and to therefore truly have ownership of their work.
